Top ten finish for BJR in shortened Race 4

Bryce Fullwood has led the Brad Jones Racing squad home in a shortened Supercars Championship Race 4 at the Melbourne SuperSprint this afternoon.

Fullwood in the Middy’s Electrical Camaro, who started the race out of 20th, came across the line in eighth, as the field was behind the second Safety Car of what became an eight lap race.

The event was originally scheduled to take place over 15 tours of the Albert Park circuit but was hit with time certainty after a delay to the start of the session due to previous incidents in other categories.

The knock on effect meant that only a handful of racing laps played out with two separate Safety Car periods.

Yesterday’s tyre loophole came into play, with the race being declared wet after a slight drizzle just before the field left the pitlane.

This hampered Andre Heimgartner (#8 R&J Batteries) and Macauley Jones (#96 Pizza Hut), who started the race on hard tyres, while their other two team-mates were on the quicker Super Softs.

Though Macauley was called to the lane early to switch off the Hards under the first Safety Car, which meant he was able to then take advantage of the rule later in the race and finish in 14th.

Heimgartner meanwhile would lose too much track position to also use that strategy, so was left out to battle forward, eventually coming across the line in 18th.

Jack Smith (#4 SCT Logistics) snagged a16th, though had been on for a much higher finish before another competitor slowed him coming into pitlane.

The four BJR Chevrolet Camaros will head straight into the back-to-back qualifying sessions for the next half of the weekend tomorrow morning at 9:05 AEDT.

What the drivers had to say…

Andre Heimgartner
Supercars Driver, #8 R&J Batteries Camaro

"Much like yesterday we went off the end of the runway and it was a bit of a disaster. So we tried our best to get off the ground and have a good one. But unfortunately we just couldn't get any luck. So it was just one of those things. Qualifying, and the strategy we made in the rain, it was just unfortunate. Tomorrow will reset and do better in qualifying and I'm not sure I'll be right."

Bryce Fullwood
Supercars Driver, #14 Middy's Electrical Camaro

"Really, really crazy race. It's the kind of stuff you'd only read about really. We've been really lucky. Phil really put his heart in his mouth there with our strategy. And yeah, it's really paid off for us. To be honest, like we had, I don't know eight laps, and I think there's probably only four or six of them were actually green. We passed a few cars and I think the car has gone not too bad but we say we still had a fair bit of luck on our side. So yeah, looking forward to tomorrow and see we can say we can keep it rolling"

Jack Smith
Supercars Driver, #14 SCT Logistics Camaro

"There was a lot going on in the race and obviously it was shortened. We didn't get the best start but yeah, we were sitting okay for a while there and anyway, there was a lot of confusion with pitstops and whatnot and we ended up getting held up in the pits for a little bit and kind of lost out on a few spots there. But yeah, the few laps that we did do the paces, okay. Yeah, it was it was just a hectic race."

Macauley Jones
Supercars Driver, #96 Pizza Hut Camaro

"It was a pretty epic race I think there was a heap going on, it's pretty chaotic. There was a lot of cars involved in some incidents and you're trying to get around and inside and outside of them all. Reasonably happy with the result considering started 21st and finished 14th. We nearly got caught out there a little bit with the strategy - we started on the Hards and then they declared a it a wet race, which it wasn't really wet. So that's kind of annoying, but the guys did an awesome job doing the strategy considering and I feel like we've got a really speedy car. We just need racing laps to let us use it. Our weakness at the moment is the qualifying trying to really hustle it and get the time out of it. But the race car itself is pretty strong. So hopefully we can actually qualify where I feel like we can race and see what we can do."
