THE WORD FROM NICK / JACK

Drivers kept their cool in the Darwin heat, as the opening practice sessions of the weekend got underway at the Hidden Valley circuit today.

The Dunlop Supercar stood out from the rest on track, the striking yellow and black livery a welcome return for Supercar fans. Nick upped the pace between sessions, however narrowly missed the top ten and making it straight through to qualifying round two tomorrow. With fresh Dunlop tyres at the ready, he will be ready to battle it out in qualifying after a final practice session in the morning.

For young gun Jack Smith, it was his first ever time turning laps in the SCT Logistics Supercar at the Darwin circuit. He continually improved his times across the two sessions, cutting over a second off his practice one time, as he learned the twists and turns of the Hidden Valley track.

Tomorrow we see the knockout qualifying format on the agenda, and the 120km race gets underway at 4:15pm local time.

NICK

“Friday practice sessions are really important, because it’s all about prepping a quick car for the knockout qualifying format tomorrow. This circuit is renowned for high tyre degradation so it’s a real advantage if you can avoid any extra track time and progress straight though to Q2, which we only just missed out on doing today.”

“The Hidden Valley circuit itself is quite technical- it’s pretty short with around a one minute ten second lap time- and it features the longest main straight anywhere we race in the country. It’s also one of the better passing opportunities around the circuit too.”

“This is one of my favourite tracks, and I’ve enjoyed racing here since I debuted in Aussie Racing Cars in 2006.  I then did a couple years of Formula Ford and went well in that category too, so I think it’s a layout of track that really seems to suit my driving style.”
