THE RECAP

After only two practice sessions yesterday, it was straight into qualifying for the Supercars at Newcastle today. In a session where only 0.8 covered the field, Nick qualified in 10th position, a mere .4 off the front of the field. The wild winds from yesterday had eased and the sun was beaming across every part of the track, ready for the first 250km race of the weekend.

Nick had settled into a fast rhythm in the race and was sitting comfortably in 5th when he was about to make his second pit stop of the race. On lap 41, the race was completely turned on its head. Fabian Coulthard hit the wall at turn one, and as he bounced back off the tyre wall, Fabians’ Supercar met with the Timken Commodore tearing the drivers’ side completely off Nick’s car.

Luckily, the side intrusion safety panels did their job, keeping Nick safe and from harm, however the harsh impact severely damaged his car. The day was over.

The team will assess the damage to see if the car is repairable for tomorrow’s final day of racing. Stay tuned to the teams’ Facebook page (@bjrsupercars) for the latest updates.

THE WORD FROM NICK

“Fabians’ rear wing hit the side of my helmet; it ripped the radio plug out, cps lights, the window net is missing, not to mention half of the car. It’s frustrating, being a street track, you’re pretty committed with your driving. I was waiting for Fabian to pit, as we weren’t far off making our next stop either.”

“The side intrusion safety panels and cage has done its job today. Smashed all the side in, parts of his car on my lap, however I’m able to walk away from that.”

“It’s a shame to have our race end like it did as our car was ridiculously good. I feel for the guys and girls here as its going to be a lot of work to get the car back for tomorrow. The car has been great this weekend, super-fast and we were keen for a solid result to end our year, so it’s really disappointing to not finish today.”
