It was a tough start to the Pirtek Endurance Cup for Nick Percat and Macauley Jones in the Snapes Racing Supercar at this weekend’s Sandown 500. When the gearshift lever snapped on lap 45, the team brought Macauley in to replace it with a new one and return him to the race. This bizarre mechanical issue took some time, and put the pair laps down, forcing them into a position where they couldn’t fight back. They finished the race in 24th, a disappointing result for the Snapes / Brad Jones Racing team.
The team will be quick to put this weekend behind them and turn their focus to the biggest race of the year, the Bathurst 1000 in three weeks’ time.
THE WORD FROM NICK / MACAULEY
Nick “It was another tough result for us at Sandown. To have two different mechanical failures out of anyone’s control was a bitter pill to swallow today. We knew we had speed yesterday and we’ve made some good comebacks from these starting positions before, so I thought we could have moved forward today and come away with some reasonable points.”
“I really feel for the guys in the team, we’d talked all weekend about aiming to beat Boss Brad’s best result here of 4th and get on the podium, but it wasn’t meant to be. Hopefully this is all our dramas out of the way before we get to Bathurst.”
Macauley “I’d managed to make up a couple of spots early on in the race and was hoping to hand the car over in a reasonable position for Nick to move forward some more. On lap 45 the gearstick snapped in half, which was a real shock. I had to pit for the guys to fit a new one, but it took around 15 minutes to get back out on track. The guys work incredibly quick, but it put us too far down the order to recover. It’s a shame for the team, this is one track we can’t seem to get right!”
