Sunday 16th September
10:15 – 10:35 – Warm Up
13:20 – 16:50 – Race 24 – 500kms
The main drivers completed the standard qualifying session, then two 60km races were had to determine the final grid. Co-drivers hopped in for the first 60kms, and where they finished is where the main drivers would start the next 60km race. These final race results then determine the starting grid for tomorrow.
Macauley put in a great drive in the super tricky conditions. He made up position on the opening lap, and was racing with some fast pace as a safety car was called when another Supercar was tagged and hit the wall on the front straight. As the drivers were resuming the race, the skies opened and hail poured onto the front straight. Drivers and crews having to make a quick call whether to pit or not. Half of the field pitted for wet weather tyres, half didn’t, which drastically changed the order. The restart saw some tough battles between the top cars, Macauley getting a nudge from Russell, forcing him to push Moffat and himself wide. Macauley pushed on and finished in 5th.
Nick’s race had an unfortunate ending, he was driving solidly in 6th position when the team came across a mechanical issue with the car, forcing him to pit for fuel. Until the team are able to assess the cause of the problem tonight, it is still not determined what the root of the problem was. This put Nick down the order, finishing in 25th and now where he and Macauley will start tomorrow’s 500km race.
THE WORD FROM NICK / MACAULEY
Nick “It was really disappointing to finish where we did today. We’re still not sure exactly what the fuelling issue was, but it has certainly put a dampener on our day. We were fast all day and looked to be in a really good starting position for tomorrow’s 500km race. Lucky it is a long race so we will try work some magic, but it could have been a lot less work if we qualified where we should have. I feel for the team as things were really looking good so far this weekend!”
Macauley “The Snapes Racing Supercar had really good pace today. I was having some good battles on track between a few of the guys, but the conditions were pretty chaotic. Some parts of the circuit were dry, some wet, then hail, it had everything and it certainly tested a lot of the guys. We don’t usually drive in those conditions, so you really focus on keeping out of trouble, but trying to stay fast to not give away position. It was a fun race, and I’m happy to hand back the Snapes Supercar in a good position.”
