THE ENGINEERS WORD – Paul Scalzo

What is the Gold Coast track toughest on?

Due to the heat and nature of the street circuit I believe the track at the Gold Coast is tough on both car and drivers. With fast sections of high kerbs and minimal margin for error against concrete walls, the cars are sure to be put to the test. With high ambient temperatures inside the cabin reaching up to 60 degrees celsius, the drivers need to be able to deal with the heat, keep hydrated and stay focused.

What do todays’ practice sessions focus on?

Traditionally street circuits provide very few passing opportunities, as a result we tend to focus heavily on qualifying strongly. We need to give the driver the confidence to take maximum risk over the kerbs and run close to walls will help achieve our best in qualifying. The practice sessions today are short, and the kerbs here have caught a lot of people out, so getting a good lap in, lap after lap, can be quite the challenge.

Do you think the Team BOC Commodore will have an advantage with soft tyres allocated for the whole weekend?

As we have done a greater portion of racing on the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT soft tyre this year, I think everyone is understanding its capabilities better. Extracting that one lap pace will continue to be a focus. As the softer tyre typically has a higher degradation and with likely safety cars meaning long stints home there could be some exciting racing.
