RECAP

Part two in our Darwin double-header and it was all change for tyre allocation with only five sets of the soft compound available throughout the weekend, compared to the mix of hards and softs last time out.

Solid qualifying performances for Macauley Jones in the CoolDrive Commodore, starting 18th, 16th and 23rd for the three races. In race 16 on Saturday, Macca battled hard and finished in a competitive 17th. On Sunday it was critical to manage tyres well in both qualifying and the two races. In race 17 car #3 had strong pace from p16 on the grid.

Towards the end of the race though the Team CoolDrive Commodore was hit from behind and sent off track by Garry Jacobson, finishing in a disappointing p23.

In race 18 Macca was in a fighting mood from the start, carving his way through the field and sitting in 10th by lap 10. In for a stop on lap eight, #3 was back out in p18. A good battle with Pither saw Macca win that one and the final 10 laps were a test of speed and consistency, with Jones driving a strong stint and finishing the race in p18.

THE WORD FROM MACCA

“A hard day, I was travelling well in race one and managed the tyres quite well. We had a good stop, making some places coming out of that and then unfortunately got a hit from behind from Jacobson and got sent flying with one lap to go. So frustrating!

We struggled in the second one, the car was pretty strong but I probably didn’t get the most out of it in that one tyre run that you get. We made some good passes in the early phase of the race and had a really strong race car I thought. So there is definitely a lot of positives to take away as we tuned the car a lot and tested a few different things without having test days and were still learning with the car and what it needs in these conditions.

It’s cool to have the back to back races and build on that and come back stronger. I just had a lock up at the end there but otherwise could have battled right through. Pretty happy and we have a lot to work with for Townsville”
